Halley VI research station has been shortlisted for the 2013 World Architecture Festival Awards in Singapore in October.

Antarctica - the coldest, windiest, driest, and most remote continent on earth - provides a unique environment for both the study of the earth system science and parallel analysis of habitat regimes for interplanetary exploration. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) operates all research stations on the continent. In 2007 the BAS commissioned Hugh Broughton Architects to design a new research station, it had to be better and more flexible than the otherfive stations in order to meet extreme weather conditions and had to be fully relocatable due to significant ice calving events. The architects came up with a innovative concept - modular. Modules can be used for a wide variety of activities ranging from laboratories and bedrooms to recreation areas and energy centres. The modular design brings significant benefits in terms of flexibility, easier construction and maintenance through repetition, easier relocation, enhanced fire safety and acoustic performance through separation, and greater overal robustness. The drylining material selected for all internal partitions was fermacell Gypsum Fibreboard.
